Officer Tom McCloghry is a cop on the beat, patrolling downtown Columbia, South Carolina to keep the streets safe. And, though it's not so unusual these days to see police on Segways, this one is different. This is a hydrogen hybrid Segway, created with support from the National Science Foundation. In just the last few years, Columbia has transformed itself into a hotbed of hydrogen research, thanks in large part to the Industry/University Cooperative Research Center for Fuel Cells at the University of South Carolina.

The Montreal Protocol is an international treaty designed to protect the ozone layer by phasing out the production of a number of substances believed to be responsible for ozone depletion. The phase out is planned via a timetable. For example, the substance hydro chlorofluorocarbon has a first deadline of 2015 and a final phase-out by 2030.

Pioneers Lester Brown, David Suzuki, Jonathan Porritt and others say that we are in a race against time. We are living in a small window when we can still affect positive change, have the technology to deliver that change, and could see the benefits of action towards sustainability for the planet. Inaction poses the greatest security threat.

Wind energy in Europe is set to deliver nearly 100 billion euros' worth of jobs and revenue over the next ten years, according to a new report. The "Green Growth" report from the European Wind Energy Association reveals that wind energy has defied the recession by growing 33 per cent over the past five years. And it predicts that more than half a million jobs will be created in the wind sector by 2020.

Arizona gets plenty of sunlight, and researchers there are working hard to turn that energy into electricity we can use. At Arizona State University, graduate students make and test new materials that will allow us to build smaller, cheaper, flexible photovoltaic solar cells that can go almost anywhere and test solar cells to see how surface shape affects the energy production of the cells.
