Pioneers Lester Brown, David Suzuki, Jonathan Porritt and others say that we are in a race against time. We are living in a small window when we can still affect positive change, have the technology to deliver that change, and could see the benefits of action towards sustainability for the planet. Inaction poses the greatest security threat.

Arizona gets plenty of sunlight, and researchers there are working hard to turn that energy into electricity we can use. At Arizona State University, graduate students make and test new materials that will allow us to build smaller, cheaper, flexible photovoltaic solar cells that can go almost anywhere and test solar cells to see how surface shape affects the energy production of the cells.

In Ghana the sun sets at 6pm and rises at 6am which means many communities lacking electricity live half their lives in darkness. Electricity provides a step on the ladder of economics, lights to study and cook by, machinery and refrigeration, and a standard of living that would attract teachers, nurses, and other civil service workers from the city, not to mention foreign tourists. Potential economic growth is stifled and poverty's cyclical nature is perpetuated however some forms of progress are happening.

A trip to Snowy River, a bright white crystalline formation found deep within Fort Stanton Cave in New Mexico, reveals a lot about life and energy in unexpected places. Host Lisa Van Pay meets Diana Northup and Monica Moya, researchers who study life in caves. As they explore the cave they ask questions, together science and engineering have resulted in advancements that have changed our lives dramatically. Now more than ever, the boundaries between science, technology and engineering blur together to extend our knowledge even further - but where does something completely new begin?

WWF's Earth Hour is a simple idea that's quickly turned into a global phenomenon. Hundreds of millions of people turning off their lights for one hour, on the same night, all across the planet. It's about appreciating the brilliant world we all share and how we need to protect it. Not just for an hour a year, but every day. Have a look at our short film to find out more. Sign up to say you'll be switching off at wwf.org.uk/earthhour.
